Meerut: A 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly being harassed by four youths in Meerut, hanged herself to death at her residence. The girl took the drastic step on Tuesday when her mother went to the police station to file a harassment complaint. After the incident, the teen's family blamed the police for "callousness". 

The girl's family staged a protest after the incident, demanding stringent action against the accused. The woman's family resorted to a protest when the police went to take the teen's body for a post-mortem.

The girl's mother said that she had approached the police in the past as well. The woman alleged that the accused had been harassing her daughter for a long time and she had approached the Pallavpuram police to lodge a written complaint but to no avail. 

The four accused allegedly approached the 16-year-old girl on Tuesday when she was returning home, The Times of India reported. The girl managed to escape from the spot and rushed home. Later, the teenager narrated her ordeal to her mother, who decided to lodge a complaint.

The girl's mother, who was also disturbed due to the constant harassment, was unable to comprehend her daughter's mental condition. The teenager was alone at home when she took the drastic step. One of the teenager's siblings said, "We were not at home when our mother left for the police stations. We had no idea that our sister would take such a drastic step. "

After the incident, superintendent of police (city) Vineet Bhatnagar launched an investigation into the case. He added that an FIR will be registered after a written complaint is filed.
